Are
We Really Free? Is a fourteen years old boy really free to choose to study
medicine rather than law? In a way, he is. In another sense, if he does not
know well the difference between the two types of study, as well as the
professions to which law and medicine respectively give access it is difficult
to define him as being truly free. Let’s change example. Who is free to choose
to play Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin or Honky Tonk
Train Blues by Keith Emerson? We are all more or less free to put our hands on
the keyboard of a piano and move them in some way. But what about playing those
songs? The concept of freedom is too often taken for granted, as if freedom was
something we already possess and not something to be achieved through
commitment, study and virtue.
